Cooking & Technical Writing

You may be wondering why I have paired technical writing with cooking. You may also be wondering why I am using online recipes to showcase my talents as a contract technical writer? So, I think I am a chef or something, so what?

Well, I do think I am pretty good baker, but my husband will quickly point out, “Only when she follows the recipe!”

So What! I do admit to taking creative license when it comes to the culinary arts. But, and a big BUT, the dishes I prepare do turn out better when I follow the recipe.

Being able to follow the intructions provided is the basis of this analogy.

The key purpose of all instructional material is to provide specific information and clear directions in a format easily understood by the intended reader. While composing a set of instructions I take the time to complete each step myself ... even if I have to make do with props.

Another but here is that I do a lot of cooking for pleasure and sustenance, and I avoid choosing dishes which have poorly written instructions. Why would I buy a cookbook if the sample online recipe is not easy to follow? In the same vein ... Why would you buy a bookshelf if you knew you wouldn't be able to put it together? Yes, you can hire someone to assemble the bookshelf, but you don't buy a bookshelf everyday. And why can't you follow the instructions provided?

Here is another recipe I have posted online. I hope you enjoy making it. In exchange, I hope that I can help you with your contract technical writing!

Bon appetite!
